Engaging in Social Justice Filmmaking Helps Immigrants Build a Better World
By creating Social justice films, Accent Network provides a platform for immigrants to share their stories and experiences with a broader audience. It helps to raise awareness about the challenges faced by immigrants, as well as the contributions they make to society. By sharing these stories, social justice filmmakers help to build empathy and understanding and promote greater acceptance and inclusivity.
Social justice filmmaking empowers immigrants by giving them a voice and a platform to express themselves. It helps to counteract the marginalization and disempowerment that many immigrants experience and promote greater self-esteem and confidence.
Immigrant and Refugee Art to Inspire Empathy and Social Action
Immigrant and refugee artists use their work to draw attention to issues such as racism, xenophobia, and discrimination and to advocate for policies and practices that promote greater inclusivity and equality. By doing so, they inspire others to get involved and take action to bring about positive change.
By sharing their stories and advocating for change through their art, immigrants and refugees help to create a more just and inclusive society.
Accent Network Releases Special Comic Book to Promote COVID-19 Vaccination
The Accent Network’s campaign to promote COVID-19 vaccination in the Russian-speaking community is an example of how art and community outreach can be used to address public health concerns. The campaign features a series of comic books created by Slavic artist Elena Markova and posters and in-person events designed to raise awareness and encourage vaccination.
The use of art in the campaign is particularly noteworthy. Comic books are a powerful medium for conveying complex ideas and emotions. They can effectively engage young people and other audiences who may not be reached through traditional public health campaigns.
Musicians United for Ukraine
Accent Network, a Portland social service charity oriented towards Slavic immigrants and refugees, presented a concert of classical and Ukrainian music at The Old Church Concert Hall to benefit medical relief supplies for Ukraine on March 26, 2022.
Oregon-based, nationally and internationally recognized artists add their voices in support of Ukraine and her struggle against Russia’s unjust and unprovoked aggression.
All proceeds from ticket sales and donations raised go directly to Portland-based ACCENT NETWORK. These funds will support humanitarian assistance in impacted communities in Ukraine and surrounding regions, delivering medical supplies to displaced communities.
The concert is unique! Here’s a viewer review:
“Saturday evening, March 26, my wife and I attended a benefit concert for Accent Network given by Musicians United for Ukraine in The Old Church, an intimate concert venue.
The evening featured the music of Ukrainian composers Lysenko, Skoryk, and Gnatovskaya, amongst others, highlighting the themes of hope, grief, and solace.
I listened in rapt attention to a lovely evening consisting of 2 hours of ever-changing music punctuated by an intermission in which the performers came out to mix with the audience. It was an extraordinary evening in which I learned that Portland has welcomed its first family of refugees, and they were in attendance.
